A place of amazing beauty and history. Crystal Mill is one of the major iconic shots of Colorado in autumn. Originally known as the Sheep Mountain Power House the mill was actually a compressor station that supplied compressed air for machinery in nearby Sheep Mountain Mine. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and adjacent to the summer town of Crystal. There is an interesting book store in the town of Crystal with a book on the history of the area. The area is also close to part of the 4- pass Loop backpacking trail in Aspen.
Road Beneath the Pillars of Eternity
How can man travel through a land so different and wondrous without questioning being? Even our works and feats in this landscape are but a blink of the eye to these towering masters.
I was originally on a week-long photo trip around Oregon when a snowstorm at Crater Lake NP prevented me from seeing the lake. To make up for my disappointment I decided a side trip the northern redwoods of California was in order. I drove along the incredible Howland Hill Road in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park when I came upon this stunning scene. While my heart is in the mountains, I've always found a sense of fulfillment amongst the giant forests of West Coast. There's something more than incredible about walking through giant living structures taller than most buildings. I've always sought out the most interesting and "magical" forests in my travels, and the opportunity to visit the massive redwoods of Northern California was beyond amazing.
