Standing below the night sky of Vestrahorn Mountain.
To get this shot with my friend David I set the camera for a 10-second timer and ran out into the frame.

Runners descend into the Grand Canyon on South Kaibab Trail in an attempt to complete Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim.
To capture this image I ran with my Sony RX100 and stopped when I found this view. I waited for my group to run into the frame and snapped the shot before catching back up.

Exploring the Night
"Exploring the Night"
Winner of the Travel Category in the 2012 Smithsonian Photo Contest.
A lone hiker viewed the path before him as the Milky Way rose in the night Sky. The towering Hoodoos stood high casting an immense silence in the canyon below.
I created this image after a day of shooting the solar eclipse at Bryce Canyon. Myself and a few other photographers met up and hiked down into the canyon for night shots. What started out as light painting the hoodoos turned into an awesome silhouette providing scale for the immense formations.

Star Gazing at Badwater
Night sky reflections over the Badwater Salt Flats in Death Valley National Park. Usually a dust-bowl of dried earth and salt, record rainfall had covered the desert valley with ankle-deep water. The lack of wind and dark night sky provided a reflection that simulated the feeling of floating in space surrounded by stars.

Northern Glow over Skógafoss
"Northern Glow over Skógafoss"
The faint glow of the Northern Lights over the massive Skógafoss waterfall in Southern Iceland. After arriving in Iceland that evening I set out in our camper van to make it as far east as possible before needing to sleep. As I was driving I noticed what looked like faint glowing clouds to the North. After realizing what they really were I went for the closest place with an interesting foreground to capture the amazement I was feeling, it just happened to be Skógafoss! After an hour of running around and pure delight the clouds came in and I got back on the road. It was rainy and overcast for the next 4 days but I was lucky enough to have one more cloud break my last night in Iceland, as well as another display of amazing Aurora.

Night over Owl Creek
As the last light of day faded and a storm moved in I captured the Milky Way starting to peak out over Chimney Rock. While I originally had plans for photographing the Milky Way in full force the impending hail storm sent me retreating to my tent soon after taking this image.

Night views of Hidden Lake
Capturing an image of the Milky Way over Hidden Lake in Glacier National Park is something I wanted to do since my first visit in 2010. Unfortunately, finding the conditions to create this scene proved elusive as deep snow can remain until August, creating treacherous conditions for night travel. On this visit in September of 2015 I not only found the perfect conditions with almost no snow, and a cloudless sky, I was rewarded with a view of the northern lights on the hike back!
